One of our Ballroom Fit coaches, Rachael Curtis, was out at a nightclub when she spotted Beau in a wheelchair, absolutely owning the dance floor. As the story goes, she walked straight up to him and said, “Have I got an opportunity for you.” Not long after, he rolled into Ballroom Fit for a dance class, and the rest has been unfolding ever since.
From the moment Beau arrived, it was obvious he already knew how to dance. At Ballroom Fit, our job has simply been to guide him through the technical aspects of DanceSport. What he brings to the floor is resilience, rhythm, presence, and heart. That can’t be taught. It’s lived.
Beau lives with distal arthrogryposis, a rare neuromuscular condition, but he has never seen disability as a limitation. Instead, he considers it a perspective that has shaped his determination, adaptability, and strong commitment to uplifting others. Where some might see barriers, Beau sees opportunities to grow, contribute, and lead. He turns struggle into strength, lived experience into leadership, and challenge into community empowerment.
Professionally, Beau works in the disability sector, supporting participants and families as they navigate complex systems, build confidence, and pursue their goals. His approach is grounded in empathy, practical knowledge, and the credibility that comes from understanding the landscape from the inside. Through this work, Beau helps reshape how inclusion and possibility are understood—both within the disability community and across the broader public.
Beau’s passion for reframing perspectives led him to create Beyond the Wheel, a project dedicated to shifting society’s view of disability and life challenges. Through workshops, reflective resources, and his self‑published book Beyond the Wheel – Adaptability, Beau encourages individuals, carers, and professionals to see opportunity where others might see limitation. His message is simple but powerful: possibility can thrive beyond perceived boundaries.
Beau’s achievements in para dance are a testament to that philosophy. Representing Western Australia at DanceSport Championships, he demonstrates that skill, determination, and advocacy can move in perfect rhythm. His presence on the competition floor is more than performance; it’s representation, visibility, and proof that excellence in sport belongs to everyone.
But Beau’s impact extends far beyond dance. His years of SES service, mentoring, and community involvement reflect a life dedicated to contribution. He leads not through titles, but through action, showing up, lifting others as he climbs.
Every time Beau arrives at the studio, he reminds us why we dance: to express ourselves, connect, challenge our limits, and celebrate what our bodies can achieve. Coaching him is a privilege, but more than that, it’s a lesson in what resilience looks like when combined with purpose. Beau keeps inspiring others to chase their potential, not by pretending challenges don’t exist, but by showing they don’t set the boundaries of what’s possible.
