Ian Powell

Ian’s journey in dance began at the age of seven, inspired by the joyful atmosphere and lively music of weddings and social gatherings. His first introduction to ballroom was the waltz, danced to Billy Ternent’s Souvenirs D’Italie, and that single class ignited a lifelong passion. By twelve, Ian was volunteering to assist with children’s classes at the Shirley Bickley School of Dancing in Fremantle, Western Australia. His enthusiasm soon extended to supporting adult and senior classes, and it quickly became clear that teaching was his true calling—a perfect combination of music, movement, and social connection.
Determined to share his love of dance, Ian also understood the importance of strong technical foundations. Six months before his eighteenth birthday, after excelling in both practical exams and competitions, he was invited to turn professional. He embraced the opportunity wholeheartedly and committed himself to the art of teaching.
Ian’s career is rich with achievements. Kaley Devine
Dance Coach
Kaley began her dance journey at around four years of age at Star Ballroom, tucked behind the Allied Glass warehouse in Rockingham. One of her strongest early memories was the sensation of disappearing into the music—a feeling that sparked a deep and enduring love of dance. While she had a love-hate relationship with petticoats and taffeta dresses, it was the sense of community at Star Ballroom that truly shaped her formative years.
Although Kaley stepped away from dance before completing her Star medals, the sense of belonging and joy she experienced ultimately drew her back. Her return came through Ballroom Fit, an organisation she had followed with interest due to her work in the disability sector. Impressed by its values and inclusive approach, Kaley initially volunteered with the vision-impaired dance class. Since then, her role has expanded significantly, and she now actively contributes to teaching and supporting the broader team. Her passion for inclusion is deeply personal, shaped by her own lived experience with disability and the inspiring people in her life who have taught her how to live with purpose and joy.
A strong advocate for people with disabilities, Kaley takes immense pride in the progress she sees in her students. Whether it is improved confidence, posture, balance, or simply the joy of participating, she believes the greatest reward is the shared sense of support, achievement, and laughter that fills every class. For Kaley, each lesson is an opportunity to learn from her students and celebrate the power of community through dance.

Leigh Campbell
Dance Coach
Leigh’s interest in Ballroom Dancing was sparked in 2007 while working as a barman at the Embassy Ballroom. Surrounded by the energy and camaraderie of the dance community, he was inspired to take social dance lessons himself. Over time, his casual interest grew into a full-time commitment, and he left bartending to devote himself to dance, often spending six nights a week on the dance floor.
When the Embassy Ballroom closed, Leigh identified a significant gap in the social dance scene: the lack of a central platform linking dancers with venues. Responding to this need, he created the website www.perthballroomdancing.com.au, which has since become a widely used resource within Western Australia’s social dance community, helping dancers connect, stay informed, and access events.
Leigh’s technical skills developed through the medal program at Humphreys Dance Studio. Encouraged by his wife, a DanceSport competitor, he progressed into competitive DanceSport himself. As a founding member of the Western Australian Masters Formation Team, Leigh has represented the state and performed extensively across Australia and New Zealand, showcasing his expertise in both Standard and New Vogue styles.
Beyond competition, Leigh has a passion for organising and networking dance events. He actively seeks opportunities to support the social dance community, ensuring accessible and engaging experiences for dancers of all levels. His commitment extends beyond personal achievement, aiming to foster connection, growth, and enjoyment within the wider Ballroom and DanceSport community.
Leigh’s journey reflects both dedication to his craft and a strong desire to enrich the local dance environment, making him a valued contributor to Ballroom Fit and the broader dance community.
