Ian Powell

Dance Coach

Ian’s journey in dance began at the age of seven, inspired by the lively music and joyous atmosphere at weddings and social gatherings. His first dance class introduced him to the waltz, danced to Billy Ternent’s “Souvenirs D’Italie,” igniting a lifelong passion for ballroom dancing. By twelve, Ian was volunteering to assist with children’s classes under Shirley Bickley at the Shirley Bickley School of Dancing in Fremantle, WA. His role soon expanded to include adult and senior classes, and from the outset, Ian knew he wanted to teach, finding a perfect blend of music, dance, and social interaction.

As Ian gained experience, he recognised the importance of balancing his enthusiasm for encouraging others with a strong commitment to the technical aspects of dance teaching. Six months before his eighteenth birthday, Ian’s developing expertise and success in practical exams and competitions led to an opportunity to turn professional. Embracing this chance, he dedicated himself to teaching dance more seriously, driven by his love for the art and the desire to share it with others.

Ian’s career is marked by numerous achievements. He was a member of the Western Australian Junior Formation Team that won the Australian Championships in Melbourne in 1983 and the Adult Bi-Centennial Formation Team Championship in Brisbane in 1988. In 1999, he received the Dance Masters International Service Award and was honoured for forty years of continuous service with the Shirley Bickley School of Dancing. Despite these accolades, Ian’s proudest accomplishments lie in inspiring his students to reach their individual goals, whether enjoying social dancing, excelling in bridal waltzes and debutant balls, or advancing in technique for medal tests and competitions.

Ian is a certified ballroom dance teacher and adjudicator in Modern Ballroom, Latin American, Australian New Vogue, and English Old Time styles. He serves as an examiner for medal tests and theoretical exams with Dance Masters International Association Inc., holding a Fellowship level in the Latin American Branch. He is also a registered Dancesport adjudicator and instructor in Standard, Latin American, and New Vogue styles.

Living by the motto “We live to dance today, not tomorrow,” Ian ensures his students leave each lesson with confidence and a clear understanding of dance concepts. His teaching approach simplifies key elements, enabling students to dance independently from their first class. Ian’s greatest passion is to inspire those with “two left feet” to find joy in dancing in a relaxed, fun environment.

Ian’s favourite aspect of Ballroom Fit is integrating fitness into dance instruction, promoting a healthy community through dance. Beyond ballroom dancing, Ian is a qualified primary school teacher and lecturer with experience across educational settings, focusing on individuals facing learning barriers. This multifaceted background underscores Ian’s commitment to education and his ability to inspire and support students across various contexts.

Jenny Collins

Dance Coach

Jenny’s journey into the world of dance is both inspirational and heartwarming. As a pre-schooler, she first stepped into the Embassy Ballroom, guided by her older sister. However, her initial foray into dance did not spark the joy that would later define her relationship with the art form. At nine, Jenny decided to revisit the Embassy Ballroom, accompanied by friends and discovered a newfound love for dancing.

Her early formal training began with Del Kidd, under whom she earned her first bronze medal. However, it was under the guidance of Marita and Keith Withers that Jenny’s passion and skills truly began to flourish. She quickly became a vital part of the classes, often assisting Keith by partnering with new students and demonstrating techniques. By eleven, Jenny had already started competing, showcasing her burgeoning talent and dedication to the craft.

When Keith and Marita Withers returned to England, Jenny found new mentors in Steve and Diane Clarke. Under their mentorship, she delved deeper into the teaching world, notably when they established their studio in Cannington. This period marked a significant development in her career as she transitioned from student to teacher, sharing her love and knowledge of dance with others.

Jenny’s dancing journey afforded her numerous travel opportunities, the pinnacle of which was being part of the first Australian Formation team to compete at the prestigious Winter Gardens in Blackpool, England. Competing both in the team and as a couple, Jenny also had the honour of dancing at the Albert Hall in London during the mid-70s. Her competitive achievements include reaching the top 10 in A Grade Latin in Australia, a testament to her skill and dedication. She has achieved all her technical awards, including the Star awards in Latin and Standard, and she has passed Grade 2 in Latin American Theory.

One of Jenny’s favourite aspects of being part of Ballroom Fit is the inclusiveness of the environment. She was drawn to Ballroom Fit after witnessing a demonstration of Para Dancers and Abilities Dancers, which resonated deeply with her desire to contribute meaningfully. The ideology that dance is for everyone, regardless of age or ability, struck a chord with her. Now, Jenny teaches and assists in various classes, including Visibility and Ballroom Fit classes, practice sessions with Para Dancers, and individual lessons for Abilities dancers. Her teaching style is characterised by a fun and relaxed approach, emphasising movement to music, learning steps, and, most importantly, having fun.

Despite taking long breaks from dancing throughout her life, Jenny has always identified as a dancer. Today, she continues to share her passion with others, although she dreams of one day convincing her husband to join her on the dance floor, making her world perfect.

Alister Herrmann

Dance Coach

Alister’s journey into the world of dance started at the tender age of 5, and the rhythm of dance has been an inseparable part of my life ever since. His family guided me to the local studio ‘Supadance’ in Bunbury, where they had learned their wedding dance. It was in that very studio that he joined a Saturday morning kids class, marking the beginning of my dance odyssey.

Reflecting on those early years brings a flood of happy memories whenever the music from that original kids’ class plays in his mind. While the recollection of those early experiences is a bit hazy due to his youth, the joyous moments of those Saturday mornings remain etched in his heart.

After years of private lessons in Bunbury, Alister took the plunge into teaching, starting with the Saturday kids’ class where his dance journey began. As the years unfolded, Alister transitioned to assisting adult beginner classes and eventually found myself teaching his adult classes. The move to Perth marked a new chapter, where he began teaching private lessons—a role he cherishes deeply.

Teaching is not just a profession for Alister; it’s an avenue to express his passion for DanceSport and to continually refine his understanding of the art of dance. Having competed in Juvenile, junior, and recently completing my final year in Under 21, Alsiter took pride in being WA’s highest-ranking competitor for three years—once in Juvenile and twice in U21.

The pinnacle of Alister’s competitive achievements was in his final year of U21, where he clinched the U21 DanceSport Achievement award and proudly represented the state team in both modern and New Vogue categories. His notable achievements in Melbourne, securing 4th place in U21 Open Standard and 3rd place in U21 Open New Vogue, stand as a testament to the dedication and hard work poured into his craft.

In addition to my accomplishments on the dance floor, Alister holds a Level 1 DanceSport Coach accreditation for Standard, illustrating his commitment to continuous improvement and sharing his knowledge with others.

While pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Medical Radiation Science (Medical Imaging) at Curtin University, Alister remains deeply connected to my country roots, finding solace in activities like camping, 4 Wheel Driving, and all things fitness. The philosophy of giving his all, be it in dance, academics, or fitness pursuits, has been a guiding principle in Alister’s life.

Ballroom Fit has played a pivotal role in his transition from Bunbury to Perth, offering a supportive hand that said he’ll forever be grateful for.

Kaley Devine

Kaley recalls her biggest memory was discovering how good it felt to be able to disappear into the music, dancing became her life but she also had a love-hate relationship with the petticoats and taffeta dresses.

Overall, the strong sense of community she gained from growing up at the Star is what she believes brought her back to dancing, Kaley considers herself very lucky. When Kaley initially quit dancing, she was halfway through her Star medals/awards.

It is because of them that Kaley is a strong advocate for people living with a disability.

Kaley enjoys the sense of dedication and sense of achievement she sees in her students. Over the short time Kaley has been with Ballroom Fit, she has noticed improvements in people’s confidence, strength, balance, and posture.

Dianne Van Der Poel

Dance Coach

Dianne was involved in a little ballroom dancing when she was around 9 years old. She loved it but moved away from the city so couldn’t continue. She restarted when she was 21 and a friend had started having lessons. It was through this that she met Martin, now her husband. Dianne and Martin competed for many years together. They won the Masters II Open Ballroom at the WA Open, and have competed at several competitions in the East. Highlights were making the semi-final of a Masters Open 8-dance event in Sydney and placing in a B-grade Ballroom event in Canberra. They’ve enjoyed being members of the WA Masters Formation Team since 2014. For many years, Martin & herself competed as well as both of our sons. They were busy but fun times.

Although Dianne has always been interested in teaching dancing, there was never the time until recently. She has been kindly assisting at some of the Ballroom Fit All Ability classes for 15 months now, and loving every second of it. She likes her students to enjoy the lessons, where she tries not to pick on too many things at once. Her favourite thing teaching at Ballroom Fit is working with Darryl and the all-abilities groups.

Other than dancing, Dianne is a gamer – RPGs, board games, computer games!

Irene Lamb

Dance Coach

Irene started dancing at the age of 8 learning Ballet, Tap and Musical Theatre in London.

Irene got her first job at the age of 12 after auditioning for the Ken Dodd show at the London Palladium (as a Diddy Man). It was a 38-week season, and she recalls it was a lot of fun having desks and school lessons in the dressing room and then pushing the desks in the middle in the afternoons to get made up and dressed for the show.

At the age of 13, Irene got her second paid job after auditioning for a pantomime at the London Palladium for Jack and the Beanstalk, with Jimmy Tarbuck and Arthur Askey.

Irene started Ballroom Dancing in 2000 and completed her gold awards for Latin and Ballroom in 2005/ 2005, also competing with her husband in Latin and Ballroom in 2005/ 2006.

During 17 years of competitive dancing in many competitions both in Australia and overseas (once in New Zealand), Martin’s most memorable performances have been in front of senior citizens, being one himself it was a great feeling being able to entertain them.

Mid 2019, he started to help out at Ballroom Fit’s Ability dance class. Very soon he enjoyed doing this so much that it became one of the highlights of his week. Early 2020 he was asked if he would be interested in partnering an All Abilities Lady dancer, where they have already accomplished so much together. What he loves most about Ballroom Fit is the positive attitude of all that attend, making practising so much fun.

Lauren Chisholm

Dance Coach

Lauren’s journey in dance began at a very young age, almost as if it were a part of her DNA. Growing up in a family where ballroom dance was a central focus, it was natural for her to be immersed in dance from the beginning. By age two or three, Lauren was already taking tap and jazz classes. Her formal introduction to ballroom dancing came at the tender age of four. Still, even before that, she was a constant presence in her parents’ ballroom dance studio, absorbing the rhythms and movements like a second language.

In 2018, Lauren’s commitment to dance took on a new dimension when she started assisting with the all-abilities kids’ class on Saturday mornings. This role, which she has passionately continued, has been a rewarding experience for her. Watching the children in the class grow and develop over the years has been a source of immense joy. This class has evolved into a teen class, reflecting the growth and progression of its participants. Lauren’s involvement has allowed her to witness firsthand the transformation of these young dancers into confident, skilled teenagers.

Two years later, in 2020, Lauren achieved a significant milestone in her dance career by becoming a qualified DanceSport scrutineer. This role requires a keen eye for detail and a rigorous understanding of competition rules and scoring systems. The qualification process was demanding, involving extensive study and high accuracy, but Lauren’s dedication paid off. She has been a vital part of DanceSport competitions for over a decade, and her contributions have been invaluable.

In addition to her role as a scrutineer, Lauren’s passion for teaching and mentoring shines through in her Saturday morning classes. She takes great pride in her work and finds joy in seeing the children grow in confidence and skill. The classes are diverse, incorporating partner dances, line dances, chair dances, and even the occasional TikTok dance. These sessions are not just about learning to dance but building confidence, fostering creativity, and creating a sense of community.

Lauren’s achievements are not limited to her roles in the studio and competitions. She has also completed her Community Coaching – Essential Skills certification from the Australian Institute of Sport, further enhancing her credentials and expertise. This qualification underscores her commitment to supporting her students in the All Ability Teens Class.

What Lauren loves most about her involvement with Ballroom Fit is the joy and fun that comes with it. She finds it incredibly rewarding to see the kids she teaches grow, not just in their dance skills but also in their confidence and overall development. The opportunities provided by Ballroom Fit, from awards nights to competitions and special events, offer these young dancers a platform to showcase their talents and gain recognition for their hard work. Lauren feels privileged to be a part of this journey, helping her students achieve their full potential and celebrate their successes.

Fay worked with the Gladys Newton School for children with complex disabilities. In this role she worked for a week inthe school with the Physical Education Teacher and was exposed to almost every student/child in the school. Thecapabilities of the students were often affected by several complex health and mobility issues. Fay was still able towork with each individual and encourage them to achieve their ‘best’ and have fun in the class time.

Fay is looking forward to working with different demographics and is particularly interested in individuals recovering from a ‘stroke.’

Leigh Campbell

Dance Coach

Leigh’s interest in Ballroom Dancing started when he worked as a barman at the Embassy Ballroom in 2007. Having made friends within the dancing community Leigh decided to start taking lessons himself in social dance classes. He then gave up being a barman to take-up his regular position on the dance floor. Leigh was dancing six nights a week when the Embassy Ballroom closed and realised the need for a social dancing website to link social dancers with venues. Leigh started a website www.perthballroomdancing.com.au which is popular with Western Australia’s social dancers.

Leigh developed his dancing through a medal program at Humphreys Dance Studio. Having met his current wife who was a DanceSport competitor, Leigh was inspired to take the next step and started competing in DanceSport. Leigh has been in the Western Australian Masters Formation Team as a founding member and traveled extensively around Australia and New Zealand with the team. Leigh enjoys networking dances for dancers.
